Mayumi Matzen, Piano

Mayumi Matzen was born in Kyoto, Japan in 1980, where her earliest musical training began at the age of five. Mrs. Matzen holds a bachelor’s degree from the Kyoto City University of the Arts in 2004, where she studied piano under the tutelage of renown Japanese pianist Makoto Ueno.

From 2001 to 2002, she attended the exchange program at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, where she studied with Dr. Gary Smart, under full scholarship. During this time, she participated in various recitals as a soloist, chamber musician, and collaborating as an accompanist in recitals and master classes.

In the spring of 2006, she completed her Master of Music degree in Piano Performance and Literature at the Eastman School of Music, where she was a student Douglas Humpherys. While at Eastman, Mrs. Matzen was awarded the John and Linda Lyon VanVoorhis honored scholarship, in addition to her Graduate Award. She is currently in frequent demand as a solo recitalist, as well as a collaborative pianist. Her most notable recent collaborations include performances with Patrick Addinall, principal trumpet of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, and Toshio Kaigawa, former principal oboist with the Kyoto City Symphony Orchestra.

Mrs. Matzen is currently attending in the Eastman School of Music, as a doctoral student in Piano Performance and Literature. She along with her husband, trumpeter Max Matzen currently reside in Rochester, NY.
